    Hundreds gathered at TD Place Sunday afternoon to build the highest number of snowmen in an hour. The previous record was set in Salt Lake City in 2011 with 1,279 snowmen. The Ottawa builders managed to top that with 1,299.
     
    It was all part of Cracking Up The Capital comedy festival's annual fundraiser for mental health organizations like Do It For Daron and the Royal Ottawa.
     
    "Well originally we thought that we wanted a snowball competition . . . we went from snowballs to snow men," says Marcy Galipeau, spokesperson for the festival. "We looked up the record and thought, you know what, we could beat that."
     
    Several teams came together from their workplaces or volunteer groups. Jeff Moat and his team from the Canadian Mental Health Association used signs with different emotions written on them in place of regular twig arms.
     
    "It represents one of our campaigns 'Not Myself Today,' and 'Not Myself Today' is about trying to reduce the stigma that surrounds mental illness," he said. "That's just our way of helping raise awareness of the cause.
     
    Cracking Up The Capital takes place from Monday until Saturday this week.
