Retrofit Bodyworks was founded in 1999 by certified instructor and former professional dancer, Barbara Grant. The first to introduce Pilates to Toronto's Bloor West Village, Retrofit Bodyworks initially offered group classes at Swansea Town Hall.

Immediately, demand for Barbara's expertise grew. In a matter of months, Retrofit Pilates opened its first fully equipped studio in Windermere Court while increasing its classes at Swansea Town Hall and Windermere United Church. Referrals from clients continued to create an overwhelming demand.

In the summer of 2002 Retrofit Bodyworks expanded into a brilliantly sun-lit, 2100 square foot space at the corner of Bloor and Windermere, which housed one studio for private and semi-private sessions plus a large studio for group classes. Mid-2004, we "annexed" back our original space steps away from our main studio, to meet the need for added space. In 2007 we renovated another studio in the same location. Our sunny main studio in Suite 206 now houses our machine group classes and company offices while our Suite 106 studio provides a beautiful space for private and semi-private sessions as well as a large space for mat classes.

In 2010, Retrofit launched its new logo and website. Known now simply as Retrofit Pilates, we continue to serve Toronto's west end. Dedicated to providing the highest quality of Pilates instruction accompanied by excellent customer service and generous community involvement. With a team of over a dozen highly trained instructors, and knowledgeable and friendly support staff, we are now equipped to serve the broadest possible range of clients with diverse needs, goals and fitness tastes.

    DAY 15! Spine Twist! #pilatesadventcalendar
    Sitting tall with legs out stretched out in front or taylor crossed, focus on keeping your pelvis still while lengthening the spine and gently rotating the body using the back muscles (R back of armpit to L glute) and front muscles (L front ribcage to R hip) as equally as possible . Use the image of a spiral! Alternate sides. Add straps or springs for the bonus!

    Day 14 of the #PilatesAdventCalendar is a small reprieve from the gruelling ab work you've been giving us this week - SPINE STRETCH; Forward and Side.
    While it's still abdominal work the focus becomes about Spinal Mobility, lengthening and stretching the spine. It feels SO good!
    For extra support use a medium/ large stability ball and don't forget to breathe!

    The great thing about knowing more about the Pilates Principles, is about how you can apply it to all other forms of fitness! Often, I want to ‘hoof’ some people in the gym and get them to be more aware and often it is some of the instructors!! I’m just glad that I am more aware and can focus on myself and how to adapt and apply the principles. Often, it’s hard to keep quiet - with the more info I receive from our master instructors!!

    I do a class called ‘Gravity’ at RPM Fitness on Mondays - and when it comes time for the ABS section - I incorporate the Pilates AB Series to modify what the instructor is doing - because he does a lot of flexion similar to short spine. There are several similarities with this machine and the Reformer. The Gravity machine has 14 or so different levels in height which you keep changing according to the exercise. It’s a tough workout!!

If you have a bolster or ball, you can roll out your bottom and hamstrings before stretching, otherwise here are two little releases you can do and a simple hip stretch. #pilatesadventcalendar #pilatesnerds #giveaway

    Day 9 of the Pilates Advent Calendar!
    Side Leg Series, with so many variations this is a favourite!
    These are Mat variations shown, but you could do this on the Reformer with a leg on footbar, jump board or in a strap. You could also do this with a spring on the Cadillac or Springboard.
    If it is uncomfortable to work with a single leg, consider doing just the bent leg variations and only the ones that feel okay.
